Silvicultural and forest improvement work 2017

  • In 2017, total costs of silviculture and forest improvement works were EUR 234 million. Of these total costs, EUR 211 million were allocated to silvicultural works, and EUR 23 million to forest improvement works.
  • Of different work types, all pre-commercial thinnings generated the highest costs, i.e. EUR 58 million. EUR 48 million was invested in artificial regeneration of forests. Soil preparation accounted for EUR 35 million.
  • In 2017, the artificial forest regeneration area totalled 103,000 hectares, showing a decrease of five per cent from the previous year.  Of the artificial regeneration area 77 per cent were planted and 23 were seeded. The area of all pre-commercial thinnings and improvement of young stands totalled 189 000 hectares.
  • The area treated with fellings, based on notifications of forest use, totalled 688,000 hectares in 2017. Clearcutting is estimated to total 144,000 hectares and natural regeneration 32,000 hectares. Intermediate fellings and removal of seed trees and shelterwood trees accounted for 502,000 hectares.
  • Statistics of silviculture and forest improvement include work carried out in non-industrial private forests, forest industries' forests and state owned forests. From 2015, the statistics do not include work carried out independently by non-industrial private forest owners in their own forests, as it is not recorded in the statistical data collected from forest service providers.
