Cereals balance sheet, 2023- 2024 (provisional) and 2022 - 2023 final figures

In 2023, the cereal harvest was 2.9 million tons, showing a decrease of 600 million kilos from the previous year. This was sufficient to cover the domestic use of cereals of 2.6 million tons. The food industry accounted for some 470,000 tons, animal feed for roughly 1.6 million tons, other domestic industrial uses for approximately 290,000 tons and the next year’s crop production, or sowing, for 270,000 tons. The cereals balance sheet estimate for the period from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 will be specified as final in a year from now.

  • In 2023, cereal production totaled roughly 2.9 million tons – the domestic consumption of cereals during the harvest year from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 was 2.6 million tons.
  • Livestock feeding accounted for some 1.6 million tons of the cereal harvest.
  • Approximately 470,000 tons of cereals were used in food production, with wheat accounting for half. The use of oats at 159,000 tons continues to increase and is clearly ahead of rye (74,000 tons).
  • Oat exports doubled from 221,000 tons in the previous year to 445,000 tons.
  • Cereal imports continued to decrease, being 40,000 tons.
  • There were no major changes in cereal stocks. At the beginning of the harvest year (1 July 2023) and at its end (1 July 2024), stocks were 1.3 million tons.

The cereals balance sheet’s data for the harvest year from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 are preliminary and will be specified in September 2025. Data for the harvest year from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023 have now been specified as final. All data in the statistical database are available per crop from the harvest year of 1 July 2004 – 30 June 2005.
