Agricultural Census 2020: Agricultural and horticultural labour force 2020

  • In 2020, a total of 134,000 people worked in agriculture and horticulture, of whom nearly 70% were farmers and their family members.
  • Agricultural and horticultural work made up approximately 63,000 annual work units (AWU) in 2020, of which farmers and their family members accounted a little more than 70%.
  • In 2020, hired employees worked on roughly 9,000 farms.
  • There were a little more than 10,000 permanent employees and 33,000 short-term employees. Permanent employees work especially on greenhouse and dairy farms. Outdoor horticultural farms employed the most significant number of short-term employees.
  • Agriculture and horticulture employed nearly 20,000 foreign employees, of whom some 3,400 were permanent and 16,000 short-term employees.
  • Every other farmer has a degree in agriculture and more than 90% have a vocational degree.
  • Since 2010, the number of agricultural and horticultural enterprises has decreased by 25 per cent. At the same time the workload of agriculture has decreased by approximately 20 per cent. Instead, the volume of agricultural production has not decreased noticeably.
  • The 2016 statistics were adjusted on 29 March 2022 regarding farmers, their family members and permanent employees.
