Agricultural and horticultural labour force 2023

  • In 2023, a total of 118,000 people worked in agriculture and horticulture, of whom a little more than 70% were farmers and their family members.
  • Agricultural and horticultural work made up approximately 55,000 annual work units (AWU) in 2023, of which farmers and their family members accounted 70%.
  • In 2023, hired employees worked on roughly 7,800 farms.
  • There were a little more than 11,000 permanent employees and 23,000 short-term employees. Permanent employees work especially on greenhouse and dairy farms. Outdoor horticultural farms employed the most significant number of short-term employees.
  • Agriculture and horticulture employed nearly 16,000 foreign employees, of whom some 2,600 were permanent and 13,200 short-term employees.
  • Since 2013, the number of agricultural and horticultural enterprises has decreased by 22 per cent. At the same time the workload of agriculture has decreased by approximately 24 per cent. Instead, the volume of agricultural production has not decreased noticeably.
