In 2014, the forest industries’ roundwood consumption totalled 63.9 million cubic metres, the same as the year before and 6 per cent above the average over the previous five-year period. The consumption of forest industry by-products, mainly sawmill chips and dust, amounted to 9.2 million cubic metres.
The consumption of domestic roundwood increased by 2 per cent year-on-year to 55.0 million cubic metres, while the consumption of imported roundwood decreased by 11 per cent to 8.9 million cubic metres.
By branch of industry, the most roundwood was consumed by the chemical pulp industry, 29.5 million cubic metres (–3% year-on-year). The sawmilling industry was the second highest consumer of wood: 23.6 million cubic metres (+4%).
Forest industries in south-east Finland consumed the most roundwood (19.9 million m³), almost one-third of the total and over three times more than in the next major consumption area, south-west Finland. More than 70 per cent of imported wood was consumed in south-east Finland.
