Stumpage earnings 2022 (preliminary)

Published 8.3.2023

According to preliminary data, stumpage earnings totaled EUR 2.9 billion in 2022. Denominated in euro, earnings increased by EUR 0.2 billion from the previous year and the highest ever in euro terms. In real terms, however, revenues fell by 10% year-on-year and by 6% compared to the average of the previous five years, when the change in the value of money was measured by the wholesale price index.

  • Stumpage earnings of non-industrial private forest owners amounted to EUR 2.48 billion, while the earnings of forest industry companies and the state totaled EUR 0.41 billion.
  • In real terms, the stumpage income received by non-industrial private forest owners decreased by 11% and the stumpage income received by the forest industry and the state from forests by 4% from one year ago.
  • According to preliminary data, logging volumes remained almost unchanged compared to the previous year, but pulpwood fell by 6-8%. As in the previous year, 71% of the stumpage income was generated by the log trade. In private forests, logs accounted for 72% (-1 percentage point) of revenue, and in the forest industry and state forests for 63% (+2 percentage points).
  • Spruce continued to generate the most income and its share remained the same as in the previous year (47%). The role of spruce is emphasized in thick forests in Southern Finland and non-industrial private forests. In Northern Finland and Southern and Central Ostrobothnia, pine was clearly the most important tree species, accounting for 54–75 percent of stumpage earnings.
  • The amount of investments used in the calculation of net stumpage earnings (gross stumpage earnings minus investments in wood production) is based on an estimate.
  • Changes in the monetary value are based on the wholesale price index. Wholesale prices increased by 20 per cent in 2022 from the previous year.
