Stumpage earnings 2021

Stumpage earnings totalled EUR 2.7 billion in 2021. Denominated in euro, earnings increased by EUR 0.5 billion from the previous year and by 15 per cent in real terms. Earnings were 7 per cent higher than the average for the preceding five-year period. Only in the peak years of 2007 and 2018 were revenues higher in real terms than in 2021.

• Stumpage earnings of non-industrial private forest owners amounted to EUR 2.33 billion, while the earnings of forest industry companies and the state totalled EUR 0.35 billion.
• The main reason for the increase in stumpage earnings was that felling volumes of logs in non-industrial private forests increased by almost over 20 per cent, but the increase in stumpage prices also increased income. The stumpage earnings of non-industrial private forest owners increased by 21 per cent from the previous year, but the earnings of forest industry companies and the state decreased by 6 per cent.
• Felling volumes of logs increased by 17 per cent from the previous year, and those of pulpwood by 9 per cent. The share of the log trade was almost 70 per cent of the stumpage earnings (+3 per centage points). Logs accounted for 71 per cent of the earnings in non-industrial private forests and 61 in forests owned by forest industry companies or the state.
• Spruce remained the most important tree species in terms of earnings (46%). The increase from the previous year was 2 per centage points. The role of spruce is emphasised in thick forests in Southern Finland and non-industrial private forests. In Southern Ostrobothnia and Northern Finland, pine was clearly the most important tree species, accounting for 54–76 per cent of stumpage earnings.
• By region, the earnings were highest in North Savo (EUR 277 million), Central Finland (EUR 263 million) and South Savo (EUR 260 million). The earnings increased in real terms in all other regions apart Åland. The increase was greatest in Päijät-Häme and North Karelia (28%).
• The amount of investments used in the calculation of net stumpage earnings (gross stumpage earnings minus investments in wood production) is based on an estimate. he final data will be available in September.
• Changes in the monetary value are based on the wholesale price index. Wholesale prices increased by approximately 9 per cent in 2021 from the previous year.

Due to an error in felling volumes, the results of Northern Ostrobothnia for 2020 were corrected in the database on 9 June 2022. The impact of the correction on stumpage earnings was -1.3 per cent in Northern Ostrobothnia and -0.1 per cent in the whole of Finland.
