The decrease in felling volumes and standing sales prices also decreased the 2019 stumpage earnings as anticipated. According to the preliminary data, stumpage earnings totalled EUR 2.31 billion, i.e. the same amount as in 2017. Stumpage earnings of non-industrial private forest owners amounted to EUR 2.01 billion, while the earnings of forest industry companies and the state totalled EUR 0.30 billion.
In euro, earnings decreased by EUR 0.34 billion from the previous year, which is a 16% decrease in real terms when deflated using the wholesale price index. Total earnings remained at the average level of the preceding five-year period. Compared to the five-year average, earnings of non-industrial private forest owners were 1.5% higher, while those of forest industry companies and the state decreased by nearly 7%.
According to preliminary data, the felling volume of logs decreased in 2019 by more than 10%, and that of pulpwood by around 5%. In real terms, the standing sales prices for softwood logs decreased by nearly 8%, while those for pulpwood remained almost at the level of the previous year. The share of logs of total earnings decreased from 70% to 66%. This proportion was 68% in non-industrial private forests and 57% in forests owned by forest industry companies or the state.
Of the different roundwood assortments, the felling volume of spruce logs decreased most (by 15%), while the felling volume of spruce pulpwood also decreased significantly (by 9%). According to preliminary data, spruce remained the most important tree species in terms of earnings, but its share of total earnings decreased by two percentage points to 44%. The role of spruce is emphasised in thick forests in Southern Finland and non-industrial private forests. In South Ostrobothnia and in Northern Finland, pine was clearly the most important tree species, accounting for 53–72% of earnings.
The amount of investments used in the calculation of net stumpage earnings (gross stumpage earnings minus investments in wood production) is based on an estimate.
