In 2019, the amount of fish and fish products exported from Finland was 87 million kilos. The volume of exported fish increased by 1.7 million kilos from the year before. The value of exports, EUR 164 million, decreased by as much as EUR 17 million. The value of exports of fresh whole salmon, imported from Norway and exported to other European countries, decreased from EUR 137 million to EUR 117 million.
The amount of fish exported for human consumption amounted to nearly 75 million kilos, and that of products to be used for other purposes to 12 million kilos.
The key export countries for fish and fish products were the UK (EUR 24 million), France (EUR 23 million), Lithuania (EUR 20 million), Estonia (EUR 20 million), Poland (EUR 16 million), Denmark (EUR 11 million) and Sweden (EUR 10 million). 40% of all fresh whole salmon was exported to the UK and France.
Finland’s most important export products included fresh salmon and rainbow trout, fresh and frozen Baltic herring and sprat, salmon prducts and fish roe and roe products.
In 2019, about 100 million kilos of fish and fish products were imported to Finland. Compared to the year before, the import volume decreased by 17 million kilos. Total value of imports decreased by EUR 38 million to EUR 488 million.
The amount of fish imported for human consumption was 89 million kilos. The volume of products classified as food was 7 million kilos and their value EUR 34 million less than that of the previous year.
The most important import countries for fish and fish products included Norway (EUR 296 million), Sweden (EUR 53 million) and Denmark (EUR 24 million).
Of the total import volume, nearly 60% (58 million kilos) originated in Norway. The main item imported for human consumption from Norway were whole fresh sea salmon (40 million kilos), of which 21 million kilos was exported directly. In addition, products such as shrimp and prawn, and herring preserves and ‑preparations were imported.
The volume of fish and fish products imported from Sweden totalled 11 million kilos and from Estonia 6 million kilos and Denmark 5 million kilos.
