- Finnish businesses processed 80 million kilograms of fish in 2015. The volume was the same as in 2013, when statistics on fish processing were compiled the last time.A total of 46 million kilograms of the processed fish were Finnish and 34 million kilograms were imported. The percentage of Finnish fish decreased and the percentage of imported fish increased by more than 10 per cent compared to the year 2013.
- The change in the volume of Finnish fish was due to a decrease in the freezing of Baltic herring, after exports to Russia stopped in 2014. The increase in the volume of imported fish was due to the increasing use of Norwegian salmon.
- A total of 18 million kilograms of Finnish fish and 21 million kilograms of imported fish were filleted or turned into other fresh products. A total of 14 million kilograms of fish, three quarters of which were Finnish, were used for products that involve further processing.
- Besides salmon, the most important species used by the processing industry were rainbow trout, Baltic herring, and European whitefish. These four species accounted for 97 per cent of all processed fish.
- Fish processing businesses numbered 135 in total, of which 24 processed more than half a million kilograms. They processed 94 per cent of the total amount of processed fish.
