The Fish Processing statistics include information on the amount of fish used for processed fish products and the number of processing enterprises.

Content

The statistics present the amount of fish raw materials used in processed fish products and the number of processing enterprises by product and raw material type for both domestic and imported fish.

Categories

Processed fish products are products that are made by preparing fish chemically or physically, such as by salting, drying, marinating, heating, smoking or other comparable method. The Fish Processing statistics also include raw products made by preparing fish mechanically, such as by slicing or fileting. The statistics also include the freezing of food fish. The gutting of fish is not considered to constitute fish processing unless other preparation methods are also involved. Likewise, the packaging of fish is not considered to be processing.

Data collection and sources

The statistics population comprises fish processing enterprises drawn from the Enterprise Register of Statistics Finland. The population includes all enterprises engaging in fish processing and wholesale as their main field of business as well as enterprises in other fields of business that can be considered, on the basis of their background information, to have also processed fish. In principle, the data is collected as a census.

The statistics are published biennially.
