Industrial roundwood removals by region 2019

  • In 2019, a total of 63.3 million cubic metres of roundwood were harvested for use by the forest industries. This removal volume was 5.5 million cubic metres, or 8%, lower than in the previous year. Total roundwood removals were 13% higher than the average volume during the previous ten-year period.
  • Sawlogs accounted for 25.8 and pulpwood for 37.5 million cubic metres of total roundwood removals. The felling volume of sawlogs decreased by 12% from the previous year, and that of pulpwood by 5%.
  • Roundwood removals were the highest in the regions of Northern Savonia (6.5 million cubic metres), Southern Savonia (6.3 million cubic metres), Central Finland (6.1 million cubic metres) and Northern Ostrobothnia (5.9 million cubic metres).
  • The majority (83%) of roundwood removals came from non-industrial private forests, totalling 52.8 million cubic metres, down by 9% from the previous year. Combined roundwood removals by forestry companies’ own forests and state-owned forests decreased by 5% to 10.6 million cubic metres.
  • A total of 5.1 million cubic metres of energy wood were harvested. Of this amount, delimbed stems and whole trees accounted for 2.8 million cubic metres. The total volume of stumps and logging residues was 2.3 million cubic metres.
