Regional solutions for mitigating seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea - Interdisciplinary synthesis

RESOCO

The core aim of the RESOCO is to build an interdisciplinary synthesis of up-to-date Nordic knowledge and best practices and set the stage for alternative solutions on how to effectively reconcile seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea. The project builds on previous Nordic and national projects that have been contacted in the region during the last 30 years. This study in no way overlaps with previous projects but clearly complements them and synthesizes the key results obtained in them, and by doing so takes the issue on the next level. The approach is largely societal, although technical and economic aspects are also taken into account.

Seminar

The “Regional solutions for mitigating the seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea – Interdisciplinary synthesis” project (RESOCO), funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Fisheries Cooperation program, invites you to take part of our final seminar 23-24.8 2022 (to join follow links below). You are welcome to circulate this invitation to your networks.

As you know, the Baltic Sea is a sea-basin under ecological stress and the seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic has expanded over the whole region becoming increasingly more difficult to solve. Solutions to mitigate the conflict have not been adequate and thereby the impact of seal on coastal capture fisheries and aquaculture has been distressing for the fisheries sector. Seal populations have been growing fast the last 35 years, and opportunities for directly managing the populations are limited.

The core aim of the RESOCO-project is to build an interdisciplinary synthesis of up-to-date Nordic knowledge and best practices and establish a scientific base for solutions on how to effectively reconcile the conflict. The project is coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) and comprised of strong transdisciplinary expertise from Sweden (SLU and Lund University), Denmark (Aalborg University), Estonia (University Tartu) and Åland Island (Archipelago Pares).

During  the two-day seminar project outcomes will be presented and three international expert panels will discuss central themes for the Baltic sea situation.
