Groves are the habitat type with the most abundant species in Finnish forest nature. In groves the degree of endangered species is comparatively very high. The total area of groves is small, only 12 percent of Finland's forest area. Grove forests are, however, an important habitat for many endangered forest species: almost half of the endangered forest species live in groves. 14% of grove species are classified as endangered. Groves can be found in southern Finland all the way to Lapland, but their location is largely unknown. The ecological status of the groves is also not sufficiently known. Tapio and Luke's cooperation in the development of forest mapping practices project produces the knowledge base needed for large-scale mapping of groves. In addition, the project plans a scoring system that enables the piloting of results-based subsidies.
