Towards climate-smart sustainable management of agricultural soils

EJP SOIL

EJP SOIL is a European Joint Programme Cofund on Agricultural Soil Management. The EJP Soil consortium unites a unique group of 26 leading European research institutes and universities in 24 countries.

The overall goal is to build a sustainable European integrated research system on agricultural soils and develop and deploy a reference framework on climate-smart sustainable agricultural soil management. This will create the enabling environment that will maximise the contribution of agricultural soil to key societal challenges such as food and water security, sustainable agricultural production, climate change adaptation and mitigation; ecosystem services delivery, biodiversity preservation and human health.

EJP Soil targets climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable agricultural production, ecosystem services and restoration and prevention of land and soil degradation.

The objectives are to develop knowledge, tools and an integrated research community to foster climate-smart sustainable agricultural soil management that allows sustainable food production, sustains soil biodiversity and sustains soil functions that preserves ecosystem services.

Natural Resources Institut Finland (Luke) is the coordinator of the WP3 and responsible for the calls for funding consortium's internal research projects. Currently, Luke participates in eight internal projects and acts as the coordinator of one of them. Two more projects have already been completed in early 2022.

Webinar: The EU Soil Directive and the Nordics – Challenges, expectations, and the negotiations

The European Commission presented a Soil Directive in July 2023 with the aim to have healthy soils in the EU by 2050. What does this mean for Nordic soils? In particular, what does it mean for the agricultural soil monitoring programmes in Sweden and Finland? And what is the state of the EU negotiations to agree on the directive’s scope and implementation? Welcome to a webinar where these issues will be in focus!
