Remotely readable, wireless measurement systems for forest plantation sites
Varmataimi-investoinnit
The investment project forms a project pair with the development project “Ensuring the survival of forest tree seedlings in a changing environment.” The shared aim of the project pair is to improve the successful regeneration of various tree species under changing climatic conditions and shifts in seedling production, and to strengthen the climate resilience of forests.
The investment project will acquire three wireless, remotely readable environmental monitoring systems for forest planting sites. The systems measure, in real time, soil and air temperature and moisture, precipitation, radiation level, and wind speed. They will be used for year-round monitoring of three new regeneration sites.
The investments support the work package of the development project that examines how indicators derived from open data sources—such as moisture indices and other indices based on weather and topographic data—reflect seedling performance on regeneration sites and correspond to measured field conditions. This makes it possible to assess to what extent open data can help identify high‑risk planting areas.
Information on growth conditions helps identify regeneration sites, or parts of them, that have a high risk of damage under extreme weather events. The knowledge produced by the project pair can be used to develop tools for climate change adaptation and for risk management in forest regeneration planning and the improvement of related processes.
