In 2015, the forest industries’ roundwood consumption totalled 64.7 million cubic metres, which was one per cent more than a year earlier and 3 per cent above the average over the previous five-year period. The consumption of forest industry by-products, mainly sawmill chips and dust, amounted to 8.9 million cubic metres.
The consumption of domestic roundwood increased by 2 per cent year-on-year to 56.1 million cubic metres, while the use of imported roundwood decreased by 4 per cent to 8.5 million cubic metres. The amount of domestic roundwood consumed was the largest in eight years.
The consumption of roundwood increased in both wood-products industries and pulp industries. By branch of industry, the most roundwood was consumed by the chemical pulp industry, 30.3 million cubic metres (+3 % year-on-year). The sawmilling industry was the second highest consumer of roundwood: 24.0 million cubic metres (+2 %). Of the entire roundwood assortment, the largest quantities of pine pulpwood (15.9 million m³) and hardwood pulpwood (13.0 million m³) were consumed for processing.
The forest industries in south-east Finland consumed almost a third of all roundwood: 13.3 million cubic metres were consumed in South Karelia and 7.0 million cubic metres in Kymenlaakso.
