Trade of energywood, 4th quarter and year 2025

Published 29.1.2026

The purchase volume of energywood fell in 2025 by 45 percent compared to the previous year. Volumes of delimbed stems and whole trees decreased by roughly one half, while the volume of logging residues declined by two fifths.

In 2025, the average price paid for energywood was 16 euros per cubic metre in stumpage sales and nearly 40 euros per cubic metre in delivery sales. The average price of delimbed stems fell slightly from the previous year, to just over 23 euros in stumpage sales and to just under 46 euros per cubic metre in delivery sales. The stumpage price of logging residues rose to around 15 euros, while the delivery price fell to under 29 euros.

When examining the changes, it is important to remember that the purchase volumes and prices of energywood were at record levels in 2024.

Last quarter of 2025

Prices

  • Prices of delimbed stems decreased in the last quarter of 2025. In stumpage sales, the national average price fell by 14 percent compared to the previous quarter, to 20.6 euros, and in delivery sales the price declined to 44.0 euros (–3%).
  • The stumpage price of logging residues likewise dropped to 12.7 euros (–15%), while the delivery price rose to 27.2 euros (+5%).
  • For almost all energywood assortments, the highest recorded average prices were reached in the latter half of 2024, except for the stumpage price of logging residues in the second quarter of 2025. Compared with these peak levels, the stumpage price of delimbed stems has fallen by nearly six euros (–22%), and the delivery price by just over four euros (–9%). The stumpage price of logging residues has decreased by slightly more than three euros from its peak (–21%), and the delivery price by nearly nine euros (–25%).

Trade volumes

  • Only 0.6 million cubic metres of energywood were recorded in the statistics for the final quarter of the year. One year earlier, the purchase volume had been 2.2 times as large, and during the previous five years on average 1.9 times as large.

Year 2025

Prices

  • The average price of all energywood in 2025 was 16.0 euros per cubic metre in stumpage sales and 39.7 euros per cubic metre in delivery sales. Compared with the previous year, the average price increased by 10 percent in stumpage sales and decreased by seven percent in delivery sales.
  • The national average price of delimbed stems fell to 23.4 euros (–7%) in stumpage sales and to 45.6 euros (–4%) per cubic metre in delivery sales.
  • The average price of logging residues rose to 14.9 euros (+41%) in stumpage sales and fell to 28.8 euros (–12%) in delivery sales.
  •  Energywood prices and price changes vary considerably between regions. For delimbed stems, the price difference between price regions was at most 6 euros in stumpage sales and nearly 10 euros in delivery sales in 2025. For logging residues, the variation was larger: up to about 8 euros in stumpage sales and 12 euros in delivery sales. The regional classifications used in wood trade statistics are shown on the maps available on the statistics pages.

Trade volumes

  • The recorded trade volume of energywood fell by 45 percent from the previous year and by 32 percent compared with the average of the preceding five years. Compared with the previous year, the purchase volumes of delimbed stems and whole trees declined by roughly one half, while the volume of logging residues decreased by two fifths. When measured in cubic metres, the combined trade volume of delimbed stems and whole trees decreased slightly more than that of logging residues.
  • In stumpage sales, three quarters of all energywood were purchased, while one quarter were purchased in delivery sales. Of the total volume, logging residues accounted for 52 percent and delimbed stems for 31 percent. Whole trees accounted for 14 percent and stumps for three percent.
  • In total, the statistics included 3.5 million cubic metres of energywood in 2025. The recorded trade covers roughly two thirds of all energywood purchased from private forests, and the figures are not expanded to represent all wood trade in private forests. Realised harvesting volumes are available in the statistics on commercial fellings, and consumption volumes in the statistics on wood use.

Background information on the statistics

Unit prices in the roundwood trade are recorded in the database as nominal prices valid at each point in time. However, in the texts and graphs, price changes are examined in real terms by eliminating the change in value using the cost-of-living index (1951:10=100). In the last quarter of 2025, consumer prices decreased by 0.1 percent compared with the same period a year earlier, and during the whole of 2024 they increased by 0.3 percent.

The recorded prices are based on the prices entered in wood trade contracts between buyers and sellers. Any additional payments or services related to the wood trade are not included in the statistics. Prices are recorded without government subsidies.

The data are not expanded to represent all roundwood trade in private forests. During 2022–2024, the recorded volumes represented on average about 65 percent of the energywood purchased from private forests. The coverage of the statistics varies slightly between different time periods
