Stumpage earnings 2020 (preliminary)

Published 9.3.2021
  • Gross stumpage earnings continued to decrease in 2020. According to preliminary data, stumpage earnings totalled EUR 2.08 billion. Denominated in euro, earnings decreased by more than EUR 0.2 billion from the previous year, or by 7 per cent in real terms. Earnings were nearly 9 per cent lower than on average during the preceding five-year period.
  • Stumpage earnings of non-industrial private forest owners amounted to EUR 1.75 billion, while the earnings of forest industry companies and the state totalled EUR 0.32 billion.
  • The main reason for the decrease in stumpage earnings was that felling volumes of logs in non-industrial private forests decreased by more than 10 per cent.  However, the felling volumes of logs clearly increased in forests owned by forest industry companies or the state. The stumpage earnings of non-industrial private forest owners decreased by 11 per cent from the previous year, but the earnings of forest industry companies and the state increased by 4 per cent.
  • Felling volumes of logs decreased by 6 per cent from the previous year, and those of pulpwood by 15 per cent. The share of log trade was 67 per cent of the stumpage earnings. Logs accounted for 68 per cent of the earnings in non-industrial private forests. In forests owned by forest industry companies or the state, the share of earnings from logs increased by 6 percentage points to 62 per cent.
  • Spruce remained the most important tree species in terms of earnings (44%). The role of spruce is emphasised in thick forests in Southern Finland and non-industrial private forests. In Southern Ostrobothnia and Northern Finland, pine was clearly the most important tree species, accounting for 55–78 per cent of stumpage earnings.
  • The amount of investments used in the calculation of net stumpage earnings (gross stumpage earnings minus investments in wood production) is based on an estimate.
  • Changes in the monetary value are based on the wholesale price index. Wholesale prices decreased by approximately 3 per cent in 2020 from the previous year.

The statistics were revised on 9 March 2021 due to the errors found in the felling statistics concerning industrial roundwood and energywood in 2019. The change affected the stumpage earnings concerning the whole of Finland by -0.5 per cent. The change had the greatest effect on the earnings of the regions of Northern Ostrobothnia, Kainuu and Lapland.
