Commercial marine fishery 2025

Finnish commercial marine fishermen caught a total of 89 million kilos of fish in 2025, 17 million kilos more than in the year before.

  • The Baltic herring and sprat catches, mainly caught by the trawler fleet, contained 93% of the total catch.
  • A total of 73 million kilos of Baltic herring and 9 million kilos of sprat were caught. The Baltic herring catch increased by nineteen million kilos, the sprat catch decreased by two million kilos from the previous year.
  • The value of the catch, EUR 37 million, was 1.5 million euros higher than in the previous year. Group 1 and 2 fishermen caught €34.8 million and €2.6 million respectively.
  • Measured by value, Baltic herring was the most significant species (EUR 23.6 million), followed by sprat (EUR 2.8 million), perch (EUR 2.0 million), European whitefish (EUR 2.0 million), pikeperch (EUR 2.0 million), vendace (EUR 1.7 million) and smelt (EUR 1.1 million).
  • One-fifth of the Baltic herring catch, and more than half of sprat catch were landed outside Finland.
  • European whitefish, pikeperch and roach catches increased compared to the previous year. Catches of perch, vendace, salmon, pike, bream and smelt decreased.
  • Perch, vendace, bream, smelt and roach catches were higher compared to the long-term average (1980-2024). Catches of European whitefish, pikeperch, salmon, trout, pike and burbot were below average.
  • There were 1,947 registered commercial marine fishers in Finland at the end of 2025. Of these, some 390 were group 1 fishers and 1,557 group 2 fishers.
  • The catch was reported by approximately 850 license holders of fishing vessels or fishermen authorized by a license holder.
