SafeNet (Safeguarding biodiversity and carbon-rich forest Networks in Europe) project aims to address biodiversity loss and boost ecosystem resilience in European forests, using advanced monitoring, modelling, and working with local communities to develop solutions that balance conservation with the use of natural resources.
By bringing together cutting-edge science and real-world expertise, SafeNet will provide the knowledge and tools needed to strengthen EU conservation policies, helping forests stay resilient, diverse, and full of life for generations to come.
SafeNet launched on 01 February 2025 and will run for four and a half years. It is coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and comprises a multi-actor, transdisciplinary team of experts from 14 organisations from 11 countries. This project has been funded with €6.2 million via the EU Horizon Europe Programme.
