Euro-Trials - testing of woody landscaping plants in an European network

Euro-Trials

The goal of the Euro-Trials network is to obtain comparable information about woody species of landscaping for use in different regions of Europe. In the evaluation, the main focus is on the properties that describe the plant's use value and growth, as well as climatic tolerance. The network's field experiments with a certain genus or species are carried out simultaneously in different climatic conditions. The Euro-Trials network includes nine countries: Holland (coordinator), Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland and Finland. The results of the Euro-Trials provide certainty for the introduction of new varieties and the diversification of the available plant selection, also considering the changing climate. Both the green industry and consumers benefit from information on the success of varieties. In addition, Finnish varieties can be tried in Central Europe.

Within the framework of the network, three experiments are being carried out in Finland: hydrangea (Physocarpus opulifolius, 28 varieties) in the green area of the city of Oulu, low-growing shrub eels (Spiraea, 42 varieties) at Luke's research station in Piikkiö, and Japanese hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata, 114 varieties) in the Central Park of Parainen.
