The aim of the project is to develop summer tourism in the north. The problem in Lapland is the strong winter season, which causes congestion and problems in nature areas. Summer, on the other hand, has a lot of untapped potential. This project looks at the potential of the natural areas surrounding the city of Rovaniemi for the development of summer tourism as an example. Cycling, walking and other summer activities are increasingly popular with tourists. The project will map and test low-threshold cycling, hiking and water routes based on existing infrastructure. The mapping of services along the routes and related to the productisation of the routes (accommodation, meals/refreshments, luggage transport, route descriptions and guides) will be carried out together with a network of entrepreneurs. The project is coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Seija Tuulentie) and partners include eight tourism companies from Rovaniemi, the City of Rovaniemi, the University of Lapland and the Rovaniemi Village Development Foundation. The project started in autumn 2024 and will continue until autumn 2026.
