Wood consumption 2017

  • In 2017, a total of 80.6 million cubic metres of roundwood was consumed in Finland, which was 5 per cent more than a year earlier and 9 per cent above the average in the previous five-year period. The consumption volume was highest in 2006 at 81.5 million cubic metres.
  • Most of the roundwood, 69.7 million cubic metres, or 86 per cent, was consumed by the forest industries. The remaining 10.9 million cubic metres were used in energy generation as fuelwood in small-scale housing (6.5 mill. m³) and as forest chips made from stemwood (4.4 mill. m³) in heating and power plants.
  • A total of 25.9 million cubic metres of forest industry by-products and different types of wood residues were consumed in 2017. Of this, 9.8 million cubic metres were used for the production of forest industry products, mainly as sawmill chips and dust. A total of 2.8 million cubic metres of various types of forest residues (i.e. logging residues and stumps) and 12.8 million cubic metres of forest industry by-products and other industrial wood residues (industrial chips, sawdust, bark etc.) were consumed in energy generation in heating and power plants. In small-scale housing, a total of 0.4 million cubic metres of fuelwood from wood residues from sawmills and construction as well as wood pellets  were burned.
