Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products by country 2023
The figures for international trade in the forest industry have not changed much from the preliminary figures published in April. The differences between the final and preliminary figures for the import and export values of forest industry products remained below 1%.
Forest industry exports
• The export value of forest industry products was EUR 12.0 billion, 16% lower in real terms than in the previous year (deflation: wholesale price index, 1949=100). The forest industry accounted for 16% of the value of Finland's total merchandise exports.
• 60% of the forest industry's export revenue came from Europe and 22% from Asia. The most important export destinations were Germany (12%), China (12%) and the United States (8%).
• In the wood products industry, export income was EUR 3.0 billion, one quarter less in real terms than in the previous year.
• 8.4 million cubic metres of sawn timber were exported to the world, of which 48% went to Europe. The value of sawnwood exports was EUR 1.9 billion, 27% less than in the previous year. The value of sawn timber exports to Europe fell by 23%.
• Export revenue from the pulp and paper industry fell by 13% from the previous year to EUR 9.0 billion.
• 4.5 million tonnes of pulp were exported, of which 4.0 million tonnes were bleached sulphate pulp. The value of exported pulp fell by 4% in real terms from the previous year to EUR 2.7 billion.
• Paper exports amounted to 2.6 million tonnes (-10%). The value of paper exports fell by 13% from the previous year to EUR 2.7 billion.
• The value of exported paperboard decreased by 19% to 3.2 billion euros. The volume of paperboard exported was 3.3 million tonnes (-19%).
Imports of forest industry products and wood
• The import value of forest industry products was EUR 1.6 billion, which was 2% of the Finland's total import value.
• The volume of imported wood to Finland was 5.0 million cubic metres, 13% less than in the previous year. 56% of the imported wood was pulpwood, 28% chips and 2% logs. The remaining 14% consisted of firewood and by-product wood.
• Sawn timber imports amounted to EUR 38.3 million and 47 000 cubic metres. The volume of sawnwood imports fell by 86%. 81% of the volume was imported from the EU. The volume of sawn timber increased by 12% compared to the preliminary figures.
• The main trading partners of the forest industry in terms of import value were Estonia (EUR 0.44 billion) and Sweden (EUR 0.38 billion). Most roundwood was imported from Estonia and most sawn timber from Sweden.
