Commercial fellings 2024

In 2024 a total of 62.1 million cubic meters of logs and pulpwood were harvested for industrial use and exports. The harvest volume increased by 2% (+1.1 million m³) compared to the previous year but was 1% lower than the average of the past five years. Over the last five years, the volumes of harvested energy wood have steadily increased, but in 2024, the harvest volume declined by 2%.

Industrial wood

  • The majority of roundwood removals came from non-industrial private forests, totaling 49.0 million (+1% from the previous year).
  • In state-owned and forestry company forests, 12.5 million cubic meters of industrial wood were harvested (+4%).
  • Log removals totaled 27.3 million cubic meters (+5 %), and pulpwood removals amounted to 33.7 million cubic meters (-1 %).
  • Pine was the most harvested species, totaling 28.6 million cubic meters. Spruce accounted for 24.4 million cubic meters, and birch for 9.2 million cubic meters.
  • More than six million cubic meters of industrial wood were harvested from North Karelia (6.6 million m³) and North Savo (6.4 million m³).
  • Industrial roundwood removals exceeded a million cubic meters in the municipalities of Kuopio (1.2 million m3) and Mikkeli (1.1 million m3).
  • Industrial wood harvesting volumes decreased in the regions of North Savo, Southwest Finland, Satakunta, Uusimaa, and Åland. 

Energywood

  • A total of 7.3 million cubic meters of energywood was harvested for use in heating and power plants (-2%).
  • Of energywood removals, whole trees and delimbed stems accounted for 66%.
  • The harvesting of energy wood grew most significantly in the regions of South Karelia and Kainuu.
  • The harvesting volumes decreased the most in the regions of North Karelia, Kymenlaakso, South Ostrobothnia and Åland.
  • In different regions, the highest energywood removals was recorded in Pirkanmaa (0.8 million m3).
