Description
The statistics give data on the fuelwood volume and distribution in the small-scale combustion of wood.
Content
The statistics contain data on the wood consumption in small-scale housing by fuelwood and tree species as well as by type of housing and hearth. Wood quantities are expressed as solid volumes (m³).
Categories
Fuelwood consumed by small-scale housing includes all forms of solid fuelwood used, such as stemwood harvested from forest and cut into logwood and small-diameter wood and chips, as well as other forms of fuelwood from wood residues from the forests, sawmills, construction etc.
Property has defined borders, is directly owned and registered in the real estate register. Built-up property consists of one or more buildings, and small-scale housing refers to property that has at least one detached or semi-detached house, terraced house or linked house or a holiday home.
Data collection and sources
Information on housing-specific consumption is collected with a postal questionnaire. Alternatively, households can submit the information directly with a web form. Information from non-responders is collected by phone interviews. Information is collected primarily from residents and secondarily from owners of the property. Information on holiday homes is collected from owners.
Update frequency
Luke (the Finnish Forest Research Institute, Metla) has collected information on the fuelwood consumption in small-scale housing ten times since 1927. The latest four collections took place slightly less than ten years apart, and collected information on the heating seasons of 1992/1993, 2000/2001, 2007/2008 and 2016/2017. Luke and Statistics Finland collected the newest data together.
Preparation and publication schedule
Information for the latest study was collected between April and July 2017. Information was collected from non-responders between July 2017 and November 2009. The preliminary findings were published in December 2017 and the main findings in June 2018, a little over one year after the end of the 2016/2017 heating season.
Time series
Data on wood consumption in small-scale housing is included in Luke’s time series for roundwood removals, total drain and wood consumption. Data collected by separate collection methods remain unchanged in the statistics until the next data collection.
