Description

The statistics give the number, wood consumption and production volumes of small Finnish sawmills.

Content

The wood consumption statistics for small sawmills give the number of small sawmills and information on their wood consumption and production. Roundwood consumption is recorded as solid volumes, cubic metres over bark (m³).

Categories

Small sawmills refer to sawmills or entrepreneurs that consume up to 10,000 cubic metres of wood per year. These include small local commercial sawmills, disc saws used at farms as well as portable sawmills providing sawmill services.

Information is given by roundwood assortment and mostly at a national level. Some results are also given by regional districts of the Finnish Forest Centre.

Data collection and sources

Sawmill-specific information on consumption is collected with a postal questionnaire. Alternatively, sawmills can submit the information directly with a web form. Information from non-responders and any missing data or data requiring further clarification is collected by phone interviews. The survey respondents and data sources are sawmill owners or entrepreneurs.

Update frequency

Luke (previously the Finnish Forest Research Institute, Metla) has collected data on the consumption of roundwood in sawmills seven times since 1955. The latest three collections covered the years 1990, 1998 and 2008–2010.

Preparation and publication schedule

The latest statistics of data from 2008–2010 was published in May 2012.

Time series

Data on wood consumption in small sawmills is included in Luke’s time series for roundwood production, roundwood removals, total drain and wood consumption. Data collected by separate collection methods remain unchanged in the statistics until the next data collection.
