New nature-based solutions to improve forest soil productivity in the long term

Our aim is to create new nature-based solutions to increase forest soil productivity on mineral soils by enhancing functional diversity of soils. Our solutions combine high soil productivity and tree growth with closed nutrient cycling, leading to reduced harmful impacts of forestry on biodiversity and surrounding water systems. The solutions include use of biological N2-fixation and broad-leaved trees, new types of slow-release and/or circular fertilizers as well as control of intensity of logging residue harvest for bioenergy. In addition, we bring up-to-date methods into use for estimating nutrient availability to forest trees.
