Modularity and digitality, keys for reliable and cost-effective LCA in the food chain

Modi-LCA 01

The research project significantly improves the basis for reliable science based modular LCA and its implementation for increasing number of food chain actors. The environmental impacts of food decrease due to information provided by LCA calculations, and better harmonization in carbon footprint will be achieved.

The goal of the research project is to develop further Luke's strong food LCA competence towards more versatile and distinctive environmental impact assessment based on modular calculation. The aim is to develop a modular calculation method with most important impact categories, including new categories biodiversity and soil carbon stocks. For reliable and efficient calculation, strengthening the scientific basis and automatization of data collection and calculation is needed. Even LCA is a standardized and established method, modular LCA methods are published scientifically hardly at all. The modular LCA structure, verification, and validations as well as new methods related to new impact categories (biodiversity, carbons stocks) will be published in a scientific arena.
