Total roundwood removals and drain, 2021 (provisional)

Published 8.2.2022
  • According to the preliminary data of Luke, a total of 75.8 million cubic metres of roundwood was harvested from Finnish forests in 2021. The volume increased by ten per cent at an annual level, being four per cent higher than the previous five years’ average. The volume fell short of the 2018 peak year by three per cent.
  • Of the total roundwood removals, 65.7 million cubic metres, or 87 per cent, consisted of logs and pulpwood. Of these, 65.4 million cubic metres were felled for the forest industries and to the export market and 0.3 million cubic metres for household consumption by forest owners. Log removals exceeded the limit of 30 million cubic metres a year for the first time, and spruce and pine log removals were higher than ever before.
  • The remainder, 10.1 million cubic metres, consisted of energywood, i.e. stemwood to be used as fuelwood in residential housing or as wood chips in heat and power plants. In addition, 2.6 million cubic metres of logging residues and stumps were also harvested from forests for burning. Logging residues and stumps are not included in the total roundwood removal statistics.
  • Luke has estimated that the sustained yield of Finnish forests during the period from 2016 to 2025 is on average 80.5 million cubic metres of roundwood per annum. According to the preliminary data of total roundwood removal statistics, 94 per cent of this potential was used in 2021 and on average 91 per cent between 2016–2021.
  • Roundwood removals in 2021 reached 91 million cubic metres driven by higher felling volumes. The total drain comprises roundwood removals and in total 15 million cubic metres of stemwood of logging residues and naturally died stemwood left in forests. On the basis of the National Forest Inventory, the volume of standing trees increased by 103 million cubic metres. This means that the total volume of growing stock increased by approximately 12 million cubic metres.
  • The data presented herein is preliminary. The publication date for final regional data is presented in the Release calendar of Luke’s statistics.
