Main topic: Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery
Official Statistics of Finland (OSF): Yes
European Statistical System (ESS): Yes
Description
Roundwood removals comprise of stemwood harvested for the purpose of manufacturing forest industry products (industrial roundwood removals) and generating energy (energywood removals), which also contains wood harvested for the purpose of exporting.
The total drain comprises roundwood removals as well as stemwood residues left in the forest (logging residues) and mortality of stemwood in the forest (natural drain).
Content
The statistics contain stemwood only, and the growing stock volumes in the statistics are recorded as solid volumes, cubic metres over bark. The quality requirements for the logs and pulpwood included in industrial roundwood removals are the same as in the removal statistics published by Luke. No minimum top diameter has been specified for roundwood in the energywood removals category.
Categories
The statistics on roundwood removals and drain are recorded based on the time of removal and the location of the removal area (industrial roundwood) or time and location of consumption (energywood). The statistics are compiled annually for the calendar year and presented by regional units of Finnish Forest Centre, regions and price regions. The information is presented by forest owner group, tree species and roundwood assortment.
Data collection and sources
Roundwood removals and drain of the growing stock are calculated based on other statistics and data published by Luke. The basic data on commercial roundwood removal is derived from an annually compiled “Industrial roundwood removals by region” statistics which comprise practically all log and pulpwood removals in Finland. Sawlogs from private owners’ own forests are added to this. This information is collected every 10 years or so by conducting surveys in small sawmills. Energywood removals consist of fuelwood consumed by small-scale housing as well as domestic stemwood consumed (from year 2016 harvested) in heating and power plants to generate energy.
Drain is calculated by adding an estimate of logging residues and natural drain to roundwood removals. Since 2008, this information is based on the measurements and calculations on the inventory plots included in the National Forest Inventories.
Update frequency
The statistics are compiled annually for the calendar year.
Preparation and publication schedule
Final annual statistics are published in the June following the reporting year.

Information is available from 1985 onwards.
