Number of cattle and pigs 1 December 2017

At the beginning of December, farms had more than 874,500 cattle, decreasing by more than one per cent during the year.
The number of suckler cows continued to increase, totalling 58,000.
At the end of 2017, there were 270,600 dairy cows, showing a decrease of less than two per cent from the previous year.
At the end of the previous year, there were roughly 1.1 million pigs, that is, seven per cent fewer than at the end of 2016.
There were nearly 100,000 sows and young pigs reared as sows.
