Meat production 2023

A total of 389 million kilos of meat was produced last year. This is 3% less than the previous year. Beef production increased, while pork, poultry and sheep meat production decreased. 

  • Pork accounted for 41% of meat production, poultry for 37% and beef for 22%. Sheepmeat and a small amount of horsemeat and goatmeat were also produced.
  • Beef production increased by 2% to just over 85 million kilos. Beef cattle accounted for one fifth of production. 
  • Pigmeat production fell by 7% to around 159 million kilos.
  • Poultry meat production was just under 144 million kilos, which is 2% less than in 2022.
  • Sheep meat production fell by 9% to 1.1 million kilos.
  • Organic meat production was 4.4 million kilos, of which beef accounted for around 80%. Organic beef production increased compared to the previous year, while organic pork and lamb production decreased.
