Horticultural Statistics 2010

  • In 2010, the number of horticultural enterprises was 4,491.
  • The total area for open-field production was 16,011 hectares and the total area for greenhouse production was 435 hectares.
  • In terms of cultivated area, the major open-field vegetables were garden peas (2,827 ha), carrots (1,606 ha), onions (979 ha) and cabbages (591 ha).
  • The open-field vegetable crop totalled 163 million kilos, of which carrots accounted for 67 million kilos.
  • Berry production amounted to 12 million kilos on 6,152 hectares. Most of this was accounted for by strawberries (10 million kilos and 3,311 ha).
  • Greenhouse vegetable production amounted to about 75 million kilos, of which 39 million kilos were tomatoes and a record-breaking 32 million kilos were cucumbers.
  • Potted vegetable production totalled about 81 million units, up 7.8 million on the previous year.
  • The area under cut flower production decreased to 17 hectares.
  • 60 million tulip bulbs were grown.
