Horticultural Statistics 2014 (final statistics) and Energy Consumption in Greenhouse Enterprises

  • The total energy consumption of greenhouse companies was 1 587 GWh.
  • Total energy consumption decreased (-7%) but power consumption increased (+14%) in comparison to 2011.
  • Energy chips (281 GWh) had become the most important heating fuel, while the consumption of heavy fuel oil fell to 92 GWh (-67%).

  • In 2014, there were 3,543 horticultural enterprises. There was a decrease of 316 enterprises (–8%) compared to the previous year.
  • The outdoor production area was 16,052 hectares (+2%), and the greenhouse area was 388 hectares (–1%).
  • In terms of area, the most important outdoor vegetables were peas (3,060 hectares), carrots (1,652 hectares) and onions (1,150 hectares).
  • The outdoor vegetable harvest was 186 million kilos, of which 74 million kilos were carrots.
  • In total, 16 million kilos of berries were produced in an area of 5,794 hectares. The share of strawberries was 13 million kilos in an area of 3,298 hectares.
  • Greenhouse vegetable production was 83 million kilos, of which 40 million kilos were tomatoes and 38 million kilos were cucumbers.
  • A record quantity of potted lettuce was produced: 85 million pots. The total quantity of potted vegetables produced was 108 million pots.
  • Ornamental plant production occupied an area of 127 hectares in greenhouses. The share of cut flowers and foliage was four hectares of this area.
