Commercial fellings 2022

In 2022, industrial log and pulpwood removals totalled 64.0 million cubic metres. The volume remained high, even though it decreased by 1.8 million cubic metres from the previous year. The felling volume was the third highest in the history of the statistics.

• The majority (82%) of roundwood removals came from non-industrial private forests, totalling 52.3 million cubic metres of industrial roundwood, showing a decrease of 3% from the previous year.
• Roundwood removals from forests owned by the state and forest industry companies increased by 6% from the previous year to 11.7 million cubic metres.
• Log removals were 28.6 million and pulpwood removals 35.3 million cubic metres.
• Of the wood species, pine was harvested most for industrial use, 28.4 million cubic metres. Spruce removals were 25.4, and birch removals 10.2 million cubic metres.
• Energywood removals totalled 6.9 million cubic metres, being 6% more than in the year before. Of energy wood removals, whole trees and delimbed stems accounted for 63%.

• In different regions, the highest industrial roundwood removals were recorded in Northern Savonia (6.9 million m³) and North Karelia (6.8 million m³).
• Industrial roundwood removals exceeded a million cubic metres in the municipalities of Kuopio (1.4 million m³), Mikkeli (1.2 million m³), Savonlinna (1.0 million m³) and Kouvola (1.0 million m³).
• In different regions, the highest energywood removals were recorded in Pirkanmaa (0.8 million m³), Uusimaa (0.6 million m³) and Northern Ostrobothnia (0.6 million m³).
