Cereals balance sheet, 2021 - 2022 (provisional) and 2020 - 2021 final figures

The 2021 cereal harvest of 2.6 million tons was a quarter lower than normal. It was insufficient to cover domestic consumption of 2.8 million tons. The gap was bridged by emptying stocks and importing foreign wheat and barley. The cereal balance sheet estimate over the period of 1 July 2021 – 30 June 2022 will be specified as final in a year from now.

  • A total of 2.6 million tons of cereals were harvested in 2021 
  • Approximately 1.7 million tons, was used to feed livestock.
  • Approximately 480,000 tons was used for food production, with wheat accounting half - Oats use for food (155,000 tons) was more than rye (82,000 tons).
  • A total of 335,000 tons of cereals were exported and 195,000 tons imported during the year. The biggest export was oats at approximately 317,000 tons.

The figures for the 1 July 2021–30 June 2022 crop year are still provisional at this time, and a final cereals balance sheet will be published in September 2023.
