Nettle for Us

NFU

At a time when Europe is rethinking its material and cultural sovereignty, the Nettle For Us (NFU) project advocates for the revival of European nettle. This transnational cooperation initiative is dedicated to fostering the creation and broad circulation of new artworks across the continent, promoting this ancestral plant, rich in European heritage as a key biomaterial for sustainable design and fashion.

Confronted with fragmented knowledge, NFU’s pragmatic methodology has two pillars. First, a comprehensive pan-European study will consolidate diverse knowledge (historical, technical, artisanal) into an open-access digital White Paper, ensuring its wide dissemination to preserve heritage and empower creators. Second, building on this shared foundation, NFU will catalyze contemporary European creation by funding nine artists and designers. Their mission: to develop genuinely innovative exploratory artworks from nettle, illustrating its modern applications. These newly created European works, alongside the White Paper, will be showcased at a flagship exhibition in Copenhagen, designed to stimulate transnational dialogue and ensure the circulation of these creative and innovative approaches within the fashion and design industries.

Driven by a complementary consortium from France, Denmark, Finland, and Italy, NFU blends expertise from SMEs, research, craft, and higher education. The project aims to empower creators, foster transnational artistic exchange, reconnect professionals and citizens with their shared heritage, and promote a European model of sustainable development, rich in innovation. By valorizing a local, ecological resource, NFU will contribute to greener creative industries, enhanced European competitiveness, and a shared cultural narrative, weaving a tangible link between tradition, nature, and an innovative future for European design.
