Wood consumption 2024

Published 28.4.2025

Roundwood consumption totalled 76.7 million cubic metres in 2024, which was 2 per cent more than a year earlier. Forest industry production accounted for 82% of this volume, and the remaining amount was burned as energy.

  • In 2024, a total of 76.7 million cubic metres of roundwood was consumed in Finland (+2% from the previous year),
    • of which 62.7 million cubic metres (+2%) were processed by the forest industry. Domestic roundwood accounted for 58.8 million cubic metres (+2%) and imported roundwood for 3.8 million cubic metres (+15%) of this volume.
    • A total of 14.1 million cubic metres of roundwood (-1%) was burnt in energy generation. Of this amount, 7.6 million cubic metres were consumed as forest chips made from roundwood in heat-only and CHP-plants and the rest as firewood in small-scale housing.
  • A total of 23.5 million cubic metres of forest industry by-products and various types of wood residues were consumed (-1%).
    • The volume of by-products and residues consumed in forest industry production as chips and sawdust was 8.7 million cubic metres (+2 %).
    • In total, 14.8 million cubic metres of by-products and residues were consumed in energy generation (-3 %). Of this volume, heat-only and CHP-plants consumed 2,8 million cubic metres as forest chips made from forest residues (logging residues and stumps) and 10,1 million cubic metres as forest industry by-products (mainly industrial chips, sawdust and bark). In addition, this volume includes recycled wood and pellets burned at heating and power plants (1.4 million cubic metres) and different types of recycled wood, by-products and pellets burned in small-scale housing (0.4 million cubic metres).

Roundwood comprises industrial logs and pulpwood, as well as roundwood consumed by heating and power plants in energy generation and burned in small-scale housing. In addition, roundwood includes imported chips and sawdust processed by the forest industry, as these quantities have not previously been included in the roundwood consumption figures.

By-products and residues comprise domestic chips and sawdust consumed in forest industry production and solid forest industry by-products (not liquid by-products) consumed in energy generation, pellets and recycled wood, as well as forest chips made from logging residues and stumps.

More detailed data on Forest industries' wood consumption is presented in the Statistical Release on 28 April 2025 and more detailed data on wood in energy generation in the Statistical Release on 20 March 2025

*The statistics were published in April 2025 as preliminary figures. The preliminary data on wood consumption in 2024 was updated to final figures on November 5, 2025. Compared to the preliminary statistics, there was no change in the use of raw wood. The use of by-products and waste wood decreased by 0.04 million cubic meters as the statistics on wood energy use were refined.

The directory, file names, table structure and codes for forest statistics are revised on Thursday 12.6.2025. Read more on the page Changes in the Statistics database.
