Forest industries' wood consumption 2024

In 2024, the forest industries’ roundwood consumption totalled 62.7 million cubic metres, which was 2 per cent more than a year earlier. 

  • The consumption of domestic roundwood, i.e. logs and pulpwood, was 58.8 million cubic metres (+2 %).
  • The volume of imported roundwood, i.e. logs and pulpwood, as well as imported chips and sawdust was 3.8 million cubic metres (+15%). Imported wood accounted for six per cent of the total amount of roundwood used by the forest industry.
  • The total consumption of logs was 25.7 million cubic metres (+8%), and that of pulpwood was 36.0 million cubic metres (-2%).
  • Of the roundwood processed by the forest industry, 46% was pine, 38% spruce and 16% hardwood.
  • The wood products industry consumed 28.2 million cubic metres of roundwood (+7%), the majority of which 25.6 million cubic metres, (+7%) was consumed by the sawmill industry.
  • 34.5 million cubic metres of roundwood were consumed in the pulp industry, which was one per cent less than in the previous year. Wood consumption in the pulp industry as a whole remained at the previous year's level, with the use of domestic wood chips and sawdust increasing to 7.9 million cubic metres. Most of the wood in the pulp industry was consumed by the chemical pulp industry.
  • One-fifth of roundwood, or 12.7 million cubic metres, was consumed in the region of South Karelia. It was followed by Central Finland (6.3 million cubic metres) and Satakunta (5.1 million cubic metres).
  • A total of 8.7 million cubic metres of forest industry by-products was consumed in the manufacture of forest industry products (+2%).
