Wood pellets 2024

In 2024, a total of 324,000 tonnes of wood pellets were produced in Finland. The pellet production volume decreased by 9% from the previous year. Imports of pellets increased by 52% from the previous year and exports almost stopped.

  • In 2024, wood pellet production totalled 324,000 tonnes in Finland, down by 9% from the previous year.
  • According to the data of Finnish Customs, pellet imports into Finland totalled 213,000* tonnes, showing a increase of 52 per cent from the previous year. The three largest wood pellet import countries were Estonia, Denmark and Latvia. In total, 104,000* tonnes of pellets were imported from Estonia, 33,000* tonnes from Denmark, and 29,000* tonnes from Latvia
  • As in the previous year, exports of wood pellets continued to be very low. Total exports of wood pellets were only 500* tonnes (change from the previous year -1%).
  • The apparent consumption (production + imports - exports) of wood pellets in Finland amounted to 536,000 tonnes (+9%).
  • Deliveries of domestic pellets totalled 290,000 tonnes (-5%). The volume of pellets delivered to heating and power plants, as well as large buildings, was 255,000 tonnes. In addition, 35,000 tonnes were delivered to households and agriculture.

*Preliminary data on external trade in wood pellets amended to final on 17.9.2025. Customs foreign trade data for wood pellet imports in 2024 was updated to 30,000 tons higher than the preliminary data published in spring 2025.
