Number of bovine animals, 1 May 2013

The number of cattle at start of May was 911,940. This almost equals the number at the corresponding time last year. A total of 13,460 farms had cattle.
The number of dairy cows, suckler cows and calves decreased whereas that of heifers and bulls increased.
The number of dairy cows was 283,110. The average number of dairy cows at a farm was 30. There were 4 farms with more than 300 dairy cows in each.
The number of suckler cows decreased slightly. There were about 57,330 suckler cows at the start of May.
