  • Composting solid manure was the most common processing method to change the properties of manure. It was used on four per cent of all farms.
  • Approximately 70 per cent of cattle farms used pastures. Pastures were used on more than 70 per cent of dairy cattle farms and on less than 70 per cent on other cattle farms.
  • In Åland and Uusimaa, more than 80% of farms kept dairy cattle on pastures. In Ostrobothnia, dairy cattle were kept on pastures at slightly more than 60% of farms.
  • The pasture season was less than five months for dairy cattle and nearly six months for other cattle.
  • The daily time spent on pastures was approximately 12 hours for dairy cattle, and 21 hours for other cattle. Many farms kept other cattle on pastures round the clock.
  • Roughly 40 per cent of all cattle were able to walk around in the cowshed. Less than 40 per cent of dairy cattle and slightly more than 40 per cent of other cattle were able to walk around.
  • Nearly half of all henhouses were enriched cages. Barn henhouses accounted for 36 per cent.
  • The majority of piggeries were partly equipped with slatted floorings, and liquid manure was used as the manure processing method.
  • There were free farrowing pens at 10% of all pig farms.
  • The sufficiency of solid and liquid manure stocks was nearly 11 months.
  • Less than ten per cent of all farms transferred manure to other farms, and manure was received by 14 per cent of all farms.

The content of database tables in the statistics was changed on 29 August 2022 as follows:

  - The variable “Percentage of farms raising cattle in the region” was added to the table “Distribution of cattle places by the type of building”.

  - The variable “Percentage of farms raising pigs in the region” was added to the table “Distribution of pig places by the type of pig house”.

  - The variable “Percentage of farms producing eggs in the region, %” was added to the table “Distribution of hen places (laying hens) by the type of hen house”.

  - Of the tables “Use of different types of manure storage” and “Processing of manure on the farm”, versions divided into ELY Centre regions were added.

  - Of the table “Export and import of manure”, a version divided into production sectors was added, and the volume of exported and imported manure was added to tables.

  - Information on breeding sows was removed from the table “Access of cattle and pigs to exercise yard” because, according to an expert estimate, the access of sows to an exercise area is very rare, and the relatively high level of results obtained through data collection may be explained by the question being incorrectly interpreted in the survey.
