Horticultural Statistics 2023

2023 was a challenging year for horticulture. In Finland produced 22 million kilograms less vegetables, berries and fruit.  

  • In 2023, the total number of horticultural enterprises was 2,882.
  • Outdoor cultivation area was 17,840 hectares and greenhouse area 350 hectares.
  • In terms of cultivation area, the most important outdoor vegetables were garden pea (3,908 ha), carrot (1,641 ha) and onion (1,201 ha).
  • The total harvest of outdoor vegetables amounted to 169 million kilos, of which 64 million kilos were carrots.
  • Berry production was 17 million kilos, the most important was strawberry, 14 million kilos.
  • The amount of greenhouse vegetables produced was 90 million kilos, of which 50 million kilos were cucumber and 34 million kilos were tomatoes*. Special tomatoes produced 6 million kilos.
  • The cultivation area of ornamental plants in greenhouses totalled 106 ha.

*Data corrected. After the correction, the amount of tomato production is 34 million. kg (+ 2.9 million kg) and greenhouse cucumber 50 million. kg (+ 109,000 kg) (4.6.2024).

 

Starting from 2023, horticultural statistics are published at the level of regions instead of ELY Centre areas. The time series have been updated starting from 2019 based on the regional division of the latest statistical year.
