In 2023, 56 million kilos of fish were processed in Finland. This amount is 16 million kilos less compared to 2021 when the previous statistics of fish processing products were compiled.
- Of all fish used as raw material for processed products, 32 million kilos were of a domestic origin and 24 million kilos were imported. The volume of domestic fish decreased by six million kilos and that of imported fish by 10 million kilos compared to 2021.
- Baltic herring was the most processed species, followed by salmon and rainbow trout. These three species accounted for 90% of all fish-based raw material.
- The processing volume of salmon imported from Norway decreased from 27 million kilos to 17 million kilos.
- The amount of full frozen Baltic herring and sprat for exports decreased by four million kilos from 21 to 17 million kilos.
- Almost 21 million kilos of fish were processed into fresh fillets. Nearly two thirds of this was salmon imported from abroad.
- There were 116 fish processing enterprises, of which nine processed more than one million kilos. These accounted for 80% of the total volume of processed fish.
