Crop production 2023

Published 14.2.2024

According to Luke’s crop production statistics, the cereal harvest of roughly three million tons in 2023 was 16% below the ten-year average. It was mostly affected by the decreased barley harvest. The organic cereal harvest was 142 million kilos, accounting for roughly 5% of the total cereal harvest.

The barley harvest (1.066 million tons) was almost a third smaller than the ten-year average. The wheat harvest (0.740 million tons) was roughly a tenth smaller than the average harvest. In contrast, the rye harvest (0.090 million tons) was almost a tenth larger than the average harvest, whereas the oat harvest of roughly a billion kilos was at the average level.

The pea harvest was the largest in history for the second year in succession at roughly 90,000 tons. However, the broad bean harvest has fallen from 40 million kilos five years ago to approximately 11,000 tons.

  • Barley: 1.066 million tons (-24%)
  • Oats: 1.008 million tons (-14%)
  • Wheat: 0.740 million tons (-11%)
  • Rye: 0.091 million tons (+41%)
  • Turnip rape and rapeseed: 41 million kilos combined (-28%)
  • Potatoes: 498,000 tons (-7%)
  • Peas: 88,000 tons (-4%)
  • Broad bean: 11,000 tons (-42%)

The 2023 organic cereal harvest totals 142,000 tons (-21% from the previous year) - accounts for 5% of Finland’s total cereal production. The organic cereal harvest decreased for the first time after its upward trend.  On quantitative terms, the oat harvest fell the most, while it accounts for significantly more than half of the organic cereal harvest. The yield potential (kilos per hectare) has been calculated for some crops for 2023, and it represents the harvest level per hectare achieved by 10% of all farms.

  • Organic barley: 13,000 tons (-19%)
  • Organic oats: 86,000 tons (-19%)
  • Organic wheat: 18,000 tons (-21%)
  • Organic rye: 11,000 tons (+17%)
  • Organic rape and turnip rape: 3,000 tons (+8%)
  • Organic potatoes: 8,000 tons (-9%)
  • Organic peas: 9,000 tons (+15%)
  • Organic broad bean: 2,000 tons (-41%)

All information is available in the Luke’s Statistics database. The database includes crop production information about key crops in all parts of Finland starting from 1920, and organic information starting from 2006. Regional crop production information is available in the service starting from 1999, and organic information starting from 2014. Conventionally produced crop production information is available in the service starting from 2020.

Information about the quality of the cereal harvest has been compiled by combining the crop production data collected by Luke and the Finnish Food Authority’s cereal quality monitoring information.
