In 2024, some 16.6 million kilograms of fish were cultivated for human consumption in Finland. Total production was one and a half million kilos more than in 2023.

  • The value of food fish production amounted to EUR 93.3 million, which is EUR 0.5 million more than in 2023.
  • Three quarters (12.4 million kilos) of the food fish was farmed in the marine area. The Åland Islands accounted for almost half of this.
  • The production of rainbow trout amounted to 15.8 million kilograms, which accounts for 95 percent of the total food fish production. The production of cultivated European whitefish totalled 0.7 million kilograms, which is 0.1 million kilograms less than in the previous year. Other cultivated food fish species, namely arctic char and trout produced a total of 62 000 kilograms.
  • About 0.4 million kilograms of rainbow trout roe was sold for human consumption.
  • Fish fry were farmed for restocking in natural waters and for food fish production. The value of fry fish production was almost EUR 32 million.
  • A total of 202 fish farming enterprises operated in 365 fish farming facilities in Finland in 2024.
  • The number of food fish companies has fallen by a quarter and the number of natural-feed pond farmers has decreased by 40% during the last ten years. The number of fry enterprises has remained at the same level.
