  • Grain farms had the most employees, while dairy farms worked the most hours.
  • The number of farm employees has fallen by one fifth during the 2000s.
  • Farmers and their families carry out over 80 per cent of farm work.
  • The most paid employees are to be found at horticultural farms.
  • Foreign farm workers numbered about 15,000.
  • About one third of farms also operate some other kind of business.
  • The most popular type of extra business is construction contracting.
