Number of pigs 1 April 2024 and number of sheep and goats 1 May 2024 (provisional)

There were slightly fewer pigs than in the previous year och the number of sows decreased by 1%. The number of sheep also decreased, with 115 000 head in spring 2024.

• On 1 April 2024, there were just over 977 000 pigs on around 630 farms. The number of pigs decreased by 1% and the number of holdings by 9% compared to the previous year.
• There were 69 000 sows, which was 1% less than last year. Some 280 holdings had sows.
• The number of sheep continued to fall, with around 115 500 sheep in spring 2024. This was a decrease of 5% compared to the previous year. The number of ewes fell to just under 59 000 (-7%).
• The number of goats in spring was 5 100.
